NHS England is responsible for commissioning a wide range of services including primary care (GPs, opticians, pharmacists and dentists), specialised services, offender healthcare, secure mental health care and some armed forces healthcare.
From the 1 April 2013, the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham was given a new duty to improve the health of the local area. The public health team that was previously based in NHS Hammersmith and Fulham has moved over to the council and is responsible for sexual health services, drug and alcohol treatment, health checks, school nursing programmes, giving up smoking programmes and services to prevent childhood obesity.
Public Health England is the overseeing body that has a duty to reduce national health inequalities and improve the nation’s health and wellbeing.
