England’s biggest ever flu vaccination drive has launched in London this month. This year’s Stay Well This Winter campaign will see more than 707,600 children aged 2-7 years in London getting protection from flu.
The programme has been extended to children in school year 3, meaning a further 107,000 can be vaccinated compared to last year.
At risk adults, including those with long-term health conditions such as asthma or heart disease, pregnant women and those over 65, will also be offered a flu vaccination. Residents of long-stay care homes and carers should also get the flu jab.
Building on the success of last year, children aged 2, 3 and 4 can get the vaccination from their GP. Parents of children in school years 1, 2 and 3 are asked to give permission for their child to receive the free nasal spray vaccination at school.
Facts about flu
Vanessa Andrea, Vice Chair of Hammersmith and Fulham CCG stated:
“The flu vaccination offers protection for millions of people most at risk including young children, the elderly and those with long-term health conditions.
“Flu is not the same as the common cold and we must recognise the difference. Flu symptoms tend to start much more suddenly, can be more severe, and last longer.
“If you are eligible for a free flu vaccination then please contact your GP, pharmacist or midwife for more details.”
In Hammersmith and Fulham, we are keen to ensure that all at risk patients, including children aged between 2-7 (as at 31st August 2016) are able to access flu vaccination.
We have been working closely for some time with our local council colleagues, particularly those that work with children’s services and with our primary schools; our local provider (Central North West London NHS Foundation Trust – CNWL) who are arranging flu vaccination sessions at local primary schools as well as with Public Health and NHS England colleagues to ensure that we are maximising every opportunity for all eligible patients to be vaccinated against flu this year.
This includes arranging flu vaccination sessions at Children’s Centres and nurseries in the borough to provide additional access to parents of children aged 2 – 4. It also includes arranging for walk in flu sessions to be delivered by GP Practices accessible to all registered patients at the locations listed below on the following dates:
